Getting Data from VizieR
To get complete data from the Gliese Catalogue of Nearby Stars, you will
use another tool called VizieR, which astronomers use to retrieve data when they
know what projects the data come from.
Launch
VizieR by clicking the link. It will open in a new window. You will see a screen
like this:
The textbox below "Direct access to catalogues from Name or Designation" is where
you search for data by catalog name. You know you want data from the Gliese Catalogue,
so type "Gliese" in the textbox. Then click "Find Catalogue." The screen will
change to look like this:
The rest of the page will now let you directly search the Gliese Catalogue.
Change the "Maximum Entries per table" dropdown menu to 9999 to return the entire
catalog. Uncheck the two boxes next to Compute. Then scroll down to the bottom
of the page and click "Submit Query."
VizieR is now returning all data from the Gliese Catalogue of Nearby Stars. The
search should take a few minutes. Click Next to see what the results of the
search should look like.
