Interpreting the NVO Registry

Once you select only Cone resources, the registry page will look like this:

Question 11. Read the description of each Cone resource. Write a one to two sentence description of each resource in your own words. Which ones will be most useful in making an H-R diagram? (Remember that you want parallaxes of as many stars as possible.

Look at the column of buttons on the left-hand side of each resource. "View" lets you look at the metadata for each resource. "Try It!" lets you use NVO tools to search the actual data for that resource.

Click Try It! for one of the surveys. The screen will look like this:

This search form is designed to search a specific area of sky, but it's still possible to get all the data for the entire sky - just enter "180" for the search radius. The search will work with a search radius of 180 degrees (for a diameter of 360 degrees), meaning the search will cover the whole sky. Select "HTML" for the Output, and click Submit.

Since you're searching the whole sky, the search could take several minutes to complete. But when it's done, you should see a table of results. Click Next to learn how to interpret the results.
